DESCRIPTION:Topic Prostate Cancer Research\n \nDora Cavallo-Medved\, Ph.D.\nDepartment of Biological Sciences\nUniversity of Windsor \nDora Cavallo-Medved received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Windsor in 2000. She was awarded a NSERC postdoctoral fellowship to study cancer progression and invasion at Wayne State University and Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit\, Michigan\, where she was later appointed a Research Assistant Professor. She returned to the University of Windsor in 2008 as a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her main research interest is on the development of 3-dimensional cellular models to study both the breast and prostate tumour microenvironment. In addition to her research\, she has also developed a great interest and passion for Science Education. She currently teaches Introductory Biology for Science majors and mentors undergraduate Biology students. She has been awarded several pedagogical grants and recently published a Biology textbook for college and university students. She also founded the UWindsor Science Academy Program for top science students and is currently developing a Science Student Network. Dr. Cavallo-Medved is on the Executive Committee of the Windsor Cancer Research Group and the Chair of the Strategic Development and Public Outreach Committees. She is also a recipient of the Roger Thibert Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Science. \n \nDr. Luis Rueda received his Bachelor’s degree in computer science from the National University of San Juan\, Argentina\, in 1993\, and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Carleton University\, Canada\, in 1998 and 2002\, respectively. He is currently a Full Professor within the School of Computer Science at the University of Windsor\, Canada. His research interests are mainly focused on machine learning and bioinformatics in transcriptomics\, interactomics and genomics. The main applications of his research are in detection of biomarkers associated with prostate cancer progression and breast cancer subtypes. In 2013\, he was the recipient of the Seeds4Hope Grant for prostate cancer research. Dr. Luis Rueda holds three patents and has published more than 100 articles in prestigious journals and conferences in machine learning and bioinformatics. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers\, and a Member of the Association for Computing Machinery\, the Science Society\, the International Society for Computational Biology and the Windsor Cancer Research Group.
